چکیده

The MISTRAL system, a service oriented architecture for semantic extraction of multimedia data from meeting recordings is described shortly. It improves on other similar systems by extracting a variety of semantic metadata from one media type and integrating it with concepts derived from other media types, as well as by adding inference capabilities to resolve ambiguities and further enrich extracted data. On top of this state-of-the-art extraction functionality a number of semantic-based, cross-modal visual applications for exploration and retrieval of extraction results were developed. Three selected applications, implemented upon the MISTRAL’s semantic application architecture, are presented and described into detail in this paper.

The Acquisition and Development of the Concepts of English Modality Through Metaphors

The current study attempted to investigate the effect of Systemic-Theoretical Instruction (STI) on English-language learners’ acquisition of the concepts of modal verbs through exploiting metaphors. To this end, the effect of the main treatment of the study, i.e. Concept-Based Instruction (CBI) was investigated through conceptual metaphors, in two gender (male vs. female) ...

Fusing Biomedical Multi-modal Data for Exploratory Data Analysis

Data analysis in modern biomedical research has to integrate data from different sources, like microarray, clinical and categorical data, so called multi-modal data. The reef SOM, a metaphoric display, is applied and further improved such that it allows the simultaneous display of biomedical multi-modal data for an exploratory analysis. Visualizations of microarray, clinical, and category data ...

Using All Our Senses: the need for a Unified Theoretical Approach to Multi-sensory Information Visualization

There is an opportunity to consider the theory of visualization for each of our senses together. We should have a united theory of visualization that covers all senses and allows users to integrate modalities. We believe there are several important facets to the theory that need to be addressed at all stages of the multi-sensory visualization process. (1) Data enhancement for multi-sensory visu...

Preconceptions and Individual Differences in Understanding Visual Metaphors

Understanding information visualization is more than a matter of reading a series of data values; it is also a matter of incorporating a visual structure into one’s own thinking about a problem. We have proposed visual metaphors as a framework for understanding high-level visual structure and its effect on visualization use. Although there is some evidence that visual metaphors can affect visua...
